Squirrels, snow, birthdays, fairies, oz, my giveaway, and a bride too.

Snowy Friday again. But only about 5 inches this time, not that foot of snow they predicted.  Here's a photo of someone who doesn't care if it is snowing:

Checking out the squirrel-proof bird feeder

Look how short this squirrel's tail is (and yes, Squirrel, I'm looking at you)

On the homefront, daughter raethan is coming home for the weekend to celebrate her 25th birthday. Son nicarus is already here. My adorable husband is stuck in Washington DC as his flight was cancelled due to high winds. All subsequent flights for tomorrow are booked solid, so he is renting a car and driving home, an almost 7 hour drive. So we are off to a bumpy start, but things will improve!

Here are some reminders:

Just three more days left for Danni's February Fairies over at her blog the Whimsical Cottage. Click on the button on my sidebar. She has done a great job of gathering bloggers to entertain this whole month with enchanting fairy posts. I say, "Thanks, Danni!"

Yesterday I posted my Power of Three Giveaway. I did forget to state that this is open to international followers too.  I will draw three winners on March 3rd. Be sure to enter!!!

March is finally just about to come storming in, and what a great month it will be. St. Patrick's Day is always fun whether you are Irish or not. Then we have the Celebrate Oz blog fest put together by Linda at her Olde Bagge and Stuffed Shirts blog on March 19th. Click on the image on my sidebar for more information. There is still time for anyone who would like to participate to sign up. Come on, it will be fun!!

And then, hurray, Ostara will be here. March 21st....spring equinox. Wiccans love their sabbats!! More posts about Ostara throughout March.

I do not usually post late in the day, but it is hectic, and the weekend is going to be busy. Besides celebrating a birthday, my daughter and I are going to a bridal shop to look at wedding dresses. She and her fiance are  getting married in August. Yikes!! Lots to do. I have never been the mother of the bride before.

Everyone have a great weekend...stay safe and be happy. I will see you all on Monday!!!

Blessings from Robin.

The "Power of Three" Giveaway! ****UPDATED*****

The Power of Three? If you are Wiccan, or of any of many pagan paths, you know about the power of three. First and foremost, for me, is the beloved Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone, symbolized by the phases of the moon. The Threefold Law of Return is part of my practice and that of many others. This is simply a basic, common sense approach to living: that what you send out will return to you threefold, be it positive actions, or negative actions. Also, there is the belief in Birth, Death, Rebirth. In spell casting I often close my spell with the words, "by the power of 3 times 3, this spell is done, so mote it be". I found that phrase in Ellen Dugan's books when I first started practicing Wicca, and have used it for a long time.

Triquetra
The Triquetra is a symbol found in some form or other in different religions, but is most commonly found in Celtic references, especially Celtic pagan use. It usually symbolizes the Triple Goddess, but has been used with other meanings, depending on the path. You will see many pagans wearing this symbol as jewelry, tattoos, on clothing, etc.

Okay, kids, the brief lesson is over for now. Onto the Giveaway!! I am thrilled to be blogging and as of this moment 67 people have signed onto follow me, and I am so gosh-darned pleased about that!! I had found some books and journals at Barnes and Noble at super bargain prices, and thought I would like to give my followers a gift. But not just one follower. I have three sets of gifts to give to 3 followers. And I will announce the winners on 3/3, that is March 3rd. Therefore, the Power of Three is very active here at Wiccan Writes.

Simple Simple Simple to win:  Be a follower, sign onto follow, and leave a comment that you are interested in receiving one of the following:

First Gift SetAnimal Speak Pocket Guide, by Ted Andrews, perfect to carry with you for a quick reference for your animal encounters and what they might mean....is it a messenger, a symbol, or something else. A journal to write down encounters you have, be they in the physical realm or the dream realm, and finally a lovely little scrumptious offering from Godiva, because Robin Larkspur loves loves loves chocolate.

Second Gift Set: For you dreamers out there, here is The Illustrated Dream Dictionary by Russell Grant, illustrated by Vicky Emptage. This is a guide to help you decode your dreams and find the hidden meanings behind all sorts of dreams. You have to have a journal to record your dreams, too. And, of course the Godiva chocolate gift, because, you know, the chocolate loving thing.

Third Gift Set: Here are two books by Janet Blackwell for your reading enjoyment. Secondhand Spirits & A Cast-Off Coven.   These are books one and two in the story of a witch in San Francisco. There is witchcraft, murder and mayhem...and a talking pig (of course, he's not really a pig, is he?) A  very fun read. Naturally, this gift set includes the aforementioned Godiva chocolate.

I am excited and looking forward to this giveaway and hope you are too. Remember, I will choose three winners on March 3rd. The winners will have 3 days to respond; I will choose another winner in case I do not receive a response from the first winners.  Be sure to leave me an email address if you do not have a blog with contact info.

The Power of Three Giveaway

*****UPDATED*****   Hi! I have switched the Godiva chocolate gift from the little bags of Dark Chocolate Almonds to the Godiva Dark Chocolate with Almonds Bars. This will be so much easier to mail with the books and journals...because Goddess Forbid, one does not want to crush one's nuts, er, um. almonds in the mail!!***********

P.S. Gosh, what am I going to do with those three other Godiva chocolate gifts??

Wiccan Bakes--Apple Crisp

My recipe box

What shall I make today?

I really need to re-write this recipe, it's been made a lot
Mom's Apple Crisp.  The best. My mom made this for us when I was growing up, and I have made it for my family since the kids were little. Most recipes for apple crisp that I see in cookbooks use oatmeal. This one does not, and is not as chewy as oatmeal can be sometimes. It is soooo delicious.

For a 13 x 9 baking dish, you will need approximately 6-8 apples. I use a mix of apples usually. This time I peeled Red Delicious and Granny Smith. I tripled this recipe as I was making an extra batch for my friend "Dee" and her husband. Here is the recipe for the single batch.

6-8 apples peeled and sliced
1 cup flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, softened

Peeled apples in a bowl of cold water with a bit of lemon juice
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
While I am peeling apples, I place the peeled apples in bowl of water with lemon juice to slow down the browning that happens after the apple is peeled. After I used the lemon, I squeezed some into my kitchen drain to purify and cleanse this portal...to keep negative energy from flowing into the house. Afterwards, I just put the lemon down the garbage disposal for a nice fresh sink.  The aroma of the lemon made me think of summer, wistfully. After I came out of my reverie, I continued with the recipe!!!

The "crisp" part of the recipe

Mix together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. Add the softened butter and combine. This will create a nice crumbly mixture.

Place the sliced apples into your baking dish. Try to have uniform slices for even baking.

Spread the crumbly crisp mixture over the top of the apples.
Bake at 350 degrees F for approximately 30 to 45 minutes. The apple crisp should be bubbling, and there should be a nice golden brown look to it. Pierce the apples to make sure they are cooked (should be soft). Baking times depend on size of apples, type of apples.

The baked apple crisp

Serve warm, maybe with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Also great cold for breakfast.
Yum. (Store covered in the fridge).

My Wiccan Ways-- The God and the Goddess

I live Wicca every moment of every day.  It is not necessary to set aside a particular day of the week to offer worship or reverence for my religious beliefs. I live my beliefs constantly. The simple fact of being Wiccan is that the God and Goddess are with me all the time. They are everywhere, all the time. You can see them in the sunrise, hear them in birdsong, sense them in quiet moments. But they are also with me in heavy traffic, grocery shopping, cleaning house, during times of upheaval, events great and small.

To quote Scott Cunningham from his book Living Wicca A Further Guide for the Solitary Practitioner (Llewellyn Publications, Woodbury, Minnesota, copyright 1993 by Scott Cunningham):  The omnipresence of our deities isn't some exalted spiritual sentiment; it's true. The Earth isn't represented by the Goddess; it is a part of Her. She is everywhere. Similarily, She is also within us, as is the God. Remembering this fact may, once again, reveal the inherent spirituality in many situations. (page 48).

When I read that passage I am enthralled by this truth. In the most simple moments of my day, to complications or aggravations, laughter and sadness, and everything in between, the God and Goddess are there. This knowledge is comforting, supportive, encouraging and aids in accountability. What do I mean by accountability? Knowing that my Deities are always with me, I must, as the Wiccan way claims, accept responsibility for my actions. The God and Goddess will hold me accountable...the Universe is always ready to return to you what you send out.

It was not easy when I first took the Wiccan path to find the God and Goddess. I felt a little awkward actually. New to the Dual Deity aspect of my religion, one has to find their own way to connect to Deity. Sometimes through trial and error, sometimes through simple routines.  Meditation was my first way to connect with the God and Goddess. But I also like other ways, from a simple stop at my household altar for a few minutes. Handling my altar tools and other symbols and pondering being Wiccan, and sending thoughts to my Deity.

There are mundane ways to connect with the God and Goddess. Indoor and outdoor gardening..what better way than with living plants. Recycling and other ways of aiding Earth, such as picking up litter when you see it. Being outside, whether it be in your own backyard or neighborhood, or in a park. Adopting animals and supporting animal shelters, finding ways to serve the God and Goddess, in the community, sunrise and sunset rituals. Rituals in this case do not have to be elaborate or structured. Simply watching the sun rise and set is enough, as long as you are in that moment with the God and Goddess. The moon's phases are another time of ritual and connection. The moon rises and travels across the night sky. It can be a barely-seen crescent or full blown wondrous beauty. The Goddess is there for us to see and commune with.

Blogging is my newest way of staying connected with Deity. By writing about my path and the things that are special and important to me as a Wiccan, I am strengthening my bond with the God and Goddess. I have met many like-minded individuals on-line through my blog, and this has helped me to enhance my ways, or in some cases, reinforce my own beliefs.  The more I learn, the more I am fully aware of how Deity affects my daily life. And learning never stops.

Wicca is not just a religion for one day of the week. It is an "every day, in every way" lifestyle. The God and the Goddess embrace me, and I embrace them. It is a continuing relationship that never fails me, and only grows stronger every day.

Fridays are Fine

Holy Smokes! It is going up to 55 degrees F today! Cue the Spring Fever music!! We still have plenty of winter left, but at least for today, it will be pleasant not to wear the Big Coat.

Look what showed up at my house yesterday! A gift from a dear friend who is always surprising me with things. She is a treasure!

Snow Witches!!

I am ready for the Full Moon tonight. The moons have many names, this month I like the name Quickening Moon. On the verge of the Wheel's turning, everything seems poised to jump into a new season. I am not an officianado of Full Moon lore, but I enjoy reading blogs of those who are. This morning I refer you to two of my favorite witchy blogs that both have great information if you would like to learn more about this month's Full Moon. Take a peek at Kallan Kennedy's blog The Secret Life of an American Working Witch  and Aine O'Brien's blog  The Deepest Well  I love these blogs!

I would like to thank everyone who commented on my post yesterday about my disenchantment with some pagans who for reasons unknown spend a lot of time criticizing other pagans. Perhaps some of that energy they expend in negative ways would be better spent focusing on their own path. I am blessed to have many great followers who "have my back" as they say!! You are awesome!

Psssst!!! The Power of Three Giveaway is coming! Intrigued? Look for details next week!!!

Blessings to All from Robin.

I Got a Ticket from the Pagan Police

Okay, I am being melodramatic here. I did not get pulled over on the Internet Highway. But I have to say sometimes I feel that way. There are many, many wonderful blogs and websites written by pagans. It is an informative and educational experience to visit; to learn about other pagan paths and to meet people that, as a solitary practitioner, one would not otherwise come in contact with. Usually, this is a positive encounter.

Unfortunately, I have also run into some very judgmental people. As a pagan this is disappointing, and at times, hurtful. Pagans in general are accepting of all paths. Pagans also understand that people in "mainstream" religions can be critical of and prejudiced against pagans, mostly due to misconceptions and lack of information. To run into this kind of prejudice from other pagans is, to say the least, disheartening.

Here are a few examples, paraphrased, of statements I have read. I will not name blogs or websites; it is not my intention to be confrontational.

Wiccans are not witches. They do not practice magic or witchcraft. Wiccans are "wishy-washy" about any kind of magic other than white magic. Wiccans are the most uptight group of people ever. Wiccans have too many rituals.

You get the idea. The right to have your own opinion is obvious. You can write whatever you want on your website. Just be sure to state that you are voicing an opinion, not necessarily a documented fact.

Wiccans are many and varied, as are most pagans. There are uptight people in all walks of life. Does that mean that if you meet, say, a teacher who was uptight, that all teachers are uptight? One bad apple in every bunch?

I am Wiccan. I also call myself a witch. I do know that there are Wiccans who do not call themselves witches, but that is their choice. Practicing magick and/or witchcraft is a personal choice. Some include it in their path, some don't. As a Wiccan, I choose not to practice black or gray magic, I prefer to practice magick that heals, helps and supports the Earth and all upon it. That is not to say that I am unfamiliar with defensive magick. I am capable and ready to protect myself and my family if the need arises.

Without belaboring these issues and opinions, I would like to state that my Wiccan ways may not be particularly appealing to pagans of different paths and beliefs. Just as those same pagans may not appeal to my path. The point is, we are all pagans doing our best to live our lives the best we can, with the skills and knowledge, beliefs and ideals that set us apart from mainstream practices. It is at times a difficult path we take. The last thing we need is criticism and judgment from our fellow pagans. Tolerance, at the least, would be appreciated.

Don't Ask Me...You Write the Caption

My apologies for getting to my Tuesday post too late to write anything of interest!! Busy morning and now I am running off to lunch with a dear friend.  So in lieu of a decent entry today, I give you this sketch for your consideration.  Don't ask me what exactly is going on here...perhaps my dear followers can fashion some interesting captions.

Wiccan Reads--A Discovery of Witches

Firstly, Happy Valentine's Day to everyone. Most of us do not need a special day to show our loves how much we love 'em. But still, it is romantic to do a little something sweet. I love my hunny a bunch!

Just finished reading A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness.  I would like to state from the start that I am not a fan of vampires, be they present in books, movies, tv shows or politics. I know I am probably in the minority, given the current plethora of vampires everywhere you look. And if the book had been titled, "A Discovery of Vampires", I most likely would not have purchased it.

from Viking, The Penguin Group copyright Deborah Harkness, 2011

Our plucky heroine, Dr. Diana Bishop, is a historian with a special interest in Alchemy...its history, roots, practiioners and processes. Dr. Bishop is also a witch. She is not happy about this inherited trait and tries her best to ignore it. She lives in a world of witches, vampires, and the odd daemons. These creatures do not play nicely together, and there is a tradition of loathing and violence between the species.

Now, we have an ancient, bewitched alchemical manuscript and things get hairy. Suddenly Diana  is surrounded by interested parties of the creature-kind who want to get their hands on this manuscript, but cannot touch it until the bewitched book is released from its spell.  Enter the vampire, Dr. Matthew Clairmont. Very tall, very pale, and very handsome. Also very ancient. And he practices yoga! The fireworks between Diana and Matthew set off a wary collaboration between the two that leads, you guessed it, to a serious romantic involvement. An involvement that is strictly forbidden by the mysterious Congregation, leading to bigoted responses from all creatures.

The book changes locations, introduces new characters throughout and generally keeps the reader's interest.  I found the middle of the book bogged down a bit, and was anxious to get into the heart of the story. The pace does pick up again and Diana has to face terrible ordeals, as well as shocking revelations about her witchiness. Her parents were killed when she was a child (shades of Harry Potter), she is forced to learn how to deal with new, awakening powers, and throughout it all is her growing love for the vampire, Matthew despite his ferocious temper and the possibility that he could take a bite out of her at any moment.

I enjoyed the world that Deborah Harkness has created, loved the mystery she has fashioned and the majority of her characters and subplots were quite fascinating and real. Though I wonder how her vampire could possibly have known and been friends with some of the most famous people throughout history and continents.

You will like this book, just suspend belief a bit, which readers of this kind of fiction must do anyway. I look forward to reading the second installment of this trilogy which is due out sometime in 2012.

Prisms and Inspiration

Looking for inspiration today. Actually all week. Inspiration for writing, crafting, cooking, even cleaning. Right now, out my window, the sun is shining spectacularly. Blinding, even. Because we do have an awful lot of snow, snowbanks, snowdrifts, snowcovered trees, houses, cars. But the sun is shining. On my window sill are three clear glass cubes. One tall, two small. Embedded inside these cubes are laser-etched objects. A hummingbird, a lighthouse and a sailboat. As the sun comes streaming in, passing through these cubes, rainbow prisms form on the floor. The sun's rays gradually move these colorful prisms up along the wall and across the ceiling. An old-fashioned sun dial, sort of, tracking time passing by the progress of the prism.

I love the prisms...not just because they are cheerful and colorful, and made by the sun through glass. They are like tiny works of art, painted by the sun. Perfect representation of light and color. I love them because I am immediately inspired to smile, and pause and think about their beauty. Inspired to want to make something beautiful either through writing, or crafting. These prisms are only visible once in a while, in winter, when the sun is bright. The sun is not bright often. So when I get a sudden glimpse of these pretty little things, I have to stop and watch them.

It is good to stop and watch something a little out of the ordinary routine. Maybe to be inspired to do something a little out of the ordinary. A small thing really, watching the prisms play in my kitchen.

Inspiration comes in unexpected ways. See what you can find for inspiration today.

Good News!

There is very good news about the fundraising for the Syracuse University pagan students and their trip to Stonehenge for the Spring Equinox. They have met their goal of raising the funds required for the trip. Mary Hudson, the SU Pagan Chaplain has written a wonderful post called "When Magic Happens". You will find it very interesting reading. Just click here Congratulations and brightest blessings to everyone involved in this effort.

MidWinter To Do List:

Keep bird feeders filled.

Knock off ice from feeders, over sliding doors, front door, back door.

Keep wood-stove burning.

Spend ten minutes getting dressed to go outside.

Spend ten minutes getting undressed after coming back in.

Towel off the dogs after they have been rolling in the snow. (ten times a day).

Do not wear flannel pajamas to bed when there are flannel sheets on the bed. (You will not be able to move).

Pretend to be shocked when the weather forecasters get it wrong.

Be prepared when the weather forecasters do not predict the foot of snow that fell overnight.

Look for missing glove.

Spend hours looking at garden catalogs.

Get more hot cocoa mix.

Remember to enjoy winter.

A Hopeful Thought

“If February give much snow
A fine summer it doth foreshow” (English proverb)

Monday Medley

Superbowl 2011 is over, the Packers beat the Steelers, and some of the commercials were fun. That sums up my knowledge of the game, and to be honest, I am not a football fan. I did enjoy the chocolate chip cookies baked for the occasion.

The winter weather was not a bane of existence this weekend, with temperatures soaring into the low thirties. Balmy, almost.

The Sunday newspaper book recommendations suggested a first time fiction writer's work. Dorothy Harkness' Discovery of Witches. I am excited about reading this book. The author has previously written two non-fiction historical books, and began writing this novel because she wondered what vampires did for a living. Somehow this warped into a story of a witch teaming up with a vampire to solve a mystery. It sounds intriguing and I will let you know my thoughts on this book soon. (A trip to my favorite bookstore will be happening today.) If you are interested in learning more about this book, you can go to the author's website  here

A reminder to take a look at February Fairies going on at http://thewhimsicalcottage.blogspot.com/
This fun event is going on all month long.

Wishing everyone a great week, good weather, and fun blogging!

Simply Saturday

Saturday is usually a "run-around" kind of day...errands, household tasks, watch college ball on tv, snacking. Generally just hanging out with my husband.  Today is no different, except it really is cold outside, my husband had to go into work for a few hours, and my son came home for the weekend.  So maybe a little different.

The sun is streaming in through the kitchen window and dining room sliding doors. The dishwasher is chugging away, Ringo, the canary is singing his operatic best, and the dogs are snoring on the loveseat in the family room. More seed catalogs arrived in the mail yesterday, so I am poring over them with glee, excitedly planning the gardens of my dreams.  I hear Mother Earth calling to me, even though there are still weeks to go before we can enjoy the outside without parkas and boots.

As a Wiccan, I appreciate every single day of every single season. There is always, always something magickal to be found even on the worst weather days. It just takes a simple step to live in the moment, this moment and be awed by the smallest example of Nature's beauty. The little sparrows jumping around the feeders, the snow sparkling like diamonds in the sun, that cold crisp smell of winter. Winter sunrises and sunsets are profound. A moment spent communing with the Lord and Lady while watching the flames in the fireplace dance and crackle.

No need for expensive "toys" and gadgets when Nature is there at any given moment to enjoy, savor and enchant. What a beautiful life, even during dire times with unrest in the world, and all the other negative events that go on day to day in our hectic life. There is always a place for peace waiting with Mother Earth and all the glories of the Universe.

Two Feet of Snow

My friend in Southern California emailed me this photo, so I do not have any information to credit it. But I thought it was too cute not to share.  The "monster snowstorm" earlier this week fizzled out before it got to our area, but all the schools had been closed the day before because forecasts were predicting upwards of two feet of snow. The kids around here enjoyed a "free"  snow day with no new snow. But here is a photo of two feet of snow for you to enjoy.

That's it for me today, can not top this.  Enjoy your Friday!!!

Comfort

A good word to meditate on this week is "Comfort". Either as a verb or a noun. The verb: To comfort someone in distress or need. Examples: The commuters in Chicago who were slammed with a major snowstorm and stuck for hours on a highway that should have been closed. The people in Australia dealing with a powerful cyclone, after weeks of flooding rains. In Egypt, the violence and unrest, the warring factions...there are so many experience fear and anger. These are just three examples, there are thousands more.

The noun: The feeling one receives from something that soothes. A cup of hot chocolate after time spent in frigid snowy weather. Hugs from a loved one. Delicious, home-cooked meals. Memories.

If you can comfort someone, whatever the situation, you contribute to the flow of positive loving energy that the world needs.  Finding comfort brings positive loving energy to you. Feel free to give comfort, and to receive it.

If Bill Murray Sees His Shadow....

As the mundane world observes Groundhog's Day (at least here in the US, I don't know if other countries have a similar observance... (Official Groundhog's Day site ) we Wiccans and pagans are observing the Imbolc sabbat. It is a good time for us to think about the coming Spring and preparations for that time. A time to renew commitments to our path, cleanse and consecrate ritual tools, our homes, our spirits. There are many websites and blogs that speak about this sabbat (and all our sabbats, by the way). Just Google "Imbolc" and see what you can find.

http://blog.tinyprints.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/

Now with this "Monster Snow Storm" that is sweeping across the country, it is hard to focus on Spring. Everything is closed down here, although at this moment there is not a single snow flake in the air, and I am wondering what all the fuss is about.  We already have a season snow total of over 118 inches. So another foot or snow, if it arrives, really won't make much of a difference.

So lighting some candles, focusing on my goals for Imbolc and asking the Celtic Goddess Brighid for her assistance. Brighid is the Goddess of hearth and home, for starters, and I love sitting by my fireplace and meditating with her. The more one can learn about a god or goddess, and communicate with them, the better it is for your rituals and spellwork, and for the times when you truly need to call upon them for help. This relationship needs a good foundation.

http://whisperingworlds.com/wiccan/imbolc.php

Later on today, of course, I am going to watch the movie "Groundhog's Day" with Bill Murray. It is one of my favorites, I can not tell you how many times I have seen it. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/

Wishing everyone a safe day in all this inclement weather. The snow should be just the right consistency for some great snowmen, and snow women, and snow animals!!

Blessed Imbolc

Oh, the north wind doth blow. Falling snow, gathering ice, frigid temperatures grip the nation. Winter is long upon us. Thankfully and refreshingly the fires of Imbolc are burning tonight. Candles flicker inside while snow dances outside. Earth will renew itself...not this moment, but soon, dears, soon. Lambs and calves and other creatures will be born and nurtured. Just as we nurture our own souls on this blessed sabbat.

Let the preparations begin for another Turning of the Wheel. Signs will begin to appear; the light is already growing brighter each day. The Goddess is with us. The God is with us. And soon all the Earth will sing their song of Spring, of Sun, of new life.

Blessings of Imbolc to one and all.
